TRUMP SLAMS INDIA WITH 25% TARIFF OVER RUSSIA TIES, CALLS IT A ‘DEAD ECONOMY’

TRUMP ANNOUNCES 25% TARIFFS ON INDIAN IMPORTS, BLAMES INDIA‑RUSSIA TIES; REIGNITES INDIA‑PAKISTAN MEDIATION CLAIMS

Tariff Shock Announcement

Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods, effective August 1, along with an additional “penalty” linked to India’s continued energy and military purchases from Russia.

He sharply criticized India's trade policies, calling it a "dead economy" that does “very little business” with the U.S.

Washington, D.C. — In a sharp escalation of U.S.–India trade tensions, former President Donald Trump announced today a 25% tariff on all Indian imports, adding an unspecified penalty linked to India’s ongoing energy and defense purchases from Russia. Simultaneously, Trump has reignited controversy by claiming he helped broker peace between India and Pakistan, urging both nations to “do trade instead of war.” However, New Delhi has officially rejected these mediation claims, stating the ceasefire arose from direct military dialogue and that trade was never discussed.

The statement issued by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry indicates that the Government of India is carefully examining the recent comments made by the US President regarding bilateral trade between the two countries. India and the US have been actively engaged in negotiations aimed at establishing a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial trade agreement over the past few months. The Government remains committed to achieving this goal, emphasizing the importance of protecting and promoting the welfare of key stakeholders such as farmers, entrepreneurs, and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). In line with this commitment, the Government has assured that it will take all necessary measures to safeguard national interests. This approach is consistent with the Government's handling of other trade agreements, including the recent Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CET Agreement) with the United Kingdom, where national interests were prioritized. The statement reflects India's cautious and strategic approach to international trade negotiations, ensuring that any agreements reached are in the best interest of the country and its stakeholders.
